Hello 2016, you’ve come a bit quickly haven’t you!? It seems like just yesterday I was starting to write on this blog, and look at us now – a year and over a 100 posts later :) I’m so happy you’ve decided to follow along with my DIY and design journey, so let’s do a quick recap of the past month/year shall we?

What Happened in December?
December is always super busy and I’ll be glad I’m getting back into a normal routine this week (not so much about going back to work tomorrow, but oh well!). We actually just got back from a week down south (to visit my family) and I haven’t even fully unpacked yet.
We surprisingly had a green Christmas this year (the photo above was taken on Boxing Day) which is quite amazing for being in Northern Ontario. When we were down south, we lived the dream life of green grass and warmer-ish temperatures, then came back to find a heck of a lot of snow waiting for us here. (Thank goodness the neighbours are super nice and shoveled the driveway while we were gone!).
On Christmas morning I helped make pancakes at the in-laws and we gobbled up some delicious food and opened presents. The Husband and I returned home, and then exchanged stocking gifts, then off to another Christmas dinner! On Boxing Day we headed down south (for more of the food and such!) AND we stopped in at Ikea to buy a few things I needed…
Because of Christmas, I have an influx of items that came into the house this year so my minimalist list is a bit larger than normal.
Items Removed in December
- Easy Bake Oven
- Deck of Cards (not full)
- 3 bathroom bottles (from my September goal)
- Christmas gifts for family/friends
- Mini-Fridge sold
- Light Timer (that I talked about here)
- Light bulbs
- Pair of mittens + a tuque
- What’s a Homeowner To Do book
- Bag of White Grout (on crazy sale!)
- Maternity T-Shirt
- This Light Kit (which is much cheaper on Amazon.com)
- This Baby Book by Jimmy Fallon
- Sirius Portable Radio Dock
- Photo/Memories Album
- Tootsie Toys
- Kreg DIY Project Kit
- Water Bottle
- Skipbo Cards (borrowing from my parents)
- Chocolate + candy thermometer
- Ikea scrubby brushes
- Rectangular Pillowcases x 2
- Striped Pillowcase
- Striped Blanket (similar)
I added the “items replaced” category, so I wouldn’t have to list some things twice (once in the removed list and once in the added list). A little puppy decided she no longer liked Momma’s red pillowcases and decided to eat them. I bought the white and black ones I’ve been seeing so often on other blogs and now I can be cool too :) (I also have a mild obsession with black and white stripes right now so it feeds my addiction). Oh and my agenda is black and white striped too (thanks to Sharon of Pretty Practical Home for letting me know of its existence!) yay :)
Plans for January/2016:
In January I will be starting to discuss our Master Bedroom closet renovation and will hopefully FINISH that project soon. Then I’ll go into the basement and show some pictures of the different spaces, and maybe share some ideas of how I envision everything in the future. Behind the scenes I will start planning out and organizing how best to approach the basement bathroom renovation for the Spring One Room Challenge and we will be actually breaking ground on that in early April (so will need to have our permits in place and contractors/plumbers hired… or at least have read up on how to DIY some extreme plumbing ourselves… we will see!).
Oh, and at that point I will be about 7 months pregnant, so I am aware that I might not be as gung ho and productive as I normally am with DIY projects. BUT I will thankfully have that time off from work so it’s not like we’ll have to squeeze a quick renovation out while working full-time. I’m hoping I won’t be as tired as I was during the first trimester… which is the reason why our closet renovation is taking so long… why sand drywall and install trim when you’d rather nap all the time right?
On the blog front I will continue my normal posting schedule of twice per week (at least until June). Once the baby comes, I MAY have to adjust and post less often, but we will cross that bridge when we get there. On the one hand I will be off work so will technically have more time to blog, but then there will be the whole taking care of a baby 24/7 which will not leave as much room in my schedule. (I’ll tell ya one thing, it’s hard to blog about DIY projects and renovations when you don’t actually have time to do said projects!).
I’ll be going into 2016 without any lofty new goals or resolutions, but I think this will be a good year to hone in on all the things I’ve been working on and really expand what I like and have been planning to do for a while now. I’ll continue to note what items I bring into my home to conscientiously share how much stuff I own, in the hopes of eventually removing more items and slowly stopping the inflow of stuff. Heck, maybe I’ll bug the Husband and mark down the stuff he brings in… but let’s not get too crazy!
Happy New Year everyone, feel free to share any resolutions (or non-resolutions) you’ve made! Let’s look forward to 2016 and all the new things together :)
