Kid’s Bedroom Redesign

Sharing before photos, layout and colour ideas for our next kid’s bedroom redesign. We’re swapping everything to match the rest of our house.

Today’s post was going to be about the progress of Félix’s bedroom… but then I realized that I never actually shared any photos of what the room looked like before!  Turns out, the last time I shared this room, Félix was still in a crib.  Either way, I’ll share the before photos and talk about the plans for the kid’s bedroom redesign.

Technically, I do have one photo of his room with his big bed in our home tour from last year.  (I didn’t post a tour this year, since nothing really changed, ha).

So let’s get caught up!  This room has always been Félix’s bedroom – however now that the kids are getting bigger, we wanted to do a change.  Ideally, this would have been Élise’s room since she’s the girl… but there was a lot of discussion and she didn’t want to have a room all by herself.

After months of going back and forth, we came up with a semi-permanent solution.  Our oldest, Zachary, will get this room until Élise’s next birthday.  Then, she will be alone and the boys will share the other room.

All the photos of the bedroom now are how Félix had it a few weeks ago.

We have the same handprint art in each of the kids’ rooms, along with various other prints and things.

Over the last year or so, Félix has hung up a few of his larger (daycare) pieces of art.  Oh, and he does not sleep with a duvet blanket at all.  Just his little baby blanky(ies) still, ha.

Of our three kids, Félix has so far been the most organized.  Maybe because he doesn’t have as much stuff (the big two like to “borrow” his things).  But I’m hoping it’s because he’s not a packrat like them :)

For his new room, he was very adamant that his plant comes with him, ha.

When I updated the hallway, I painted the faux-wood closet doors in this room too.  The plan is to keep them white to match the rest of the doors; but they could always be painted any colour.

Speaking of the hallway, one of my favourite things about this bright yellow bedroom is the light that pours out.  The morning sun hits this window first, casting a lovely glow in the hall.

Honestly, a part me was hesitant to paint this room in a colour other than yellow – it’s been such a bright spot for so many years!  Also, fun fact: yellow is Félix’s favourite colour.  I asked if it was because he liked the colour or because he room was yellow; and he assured me that he liked the colour no matter what.

(I’m pretty sure I picked the colour because I had leftover paint and not because I consulted him, but who knows).

Let’s talk about where this room is going!

If you follow me on Instagram, you got some sneaky peeks the last week or so.

Years ago, I saved a bunch of rainbow/dinosaur/jungle wallpaper ideas for this eventual room redesign.  Showing the kids, they each chose their favourite and I went from there.  (I picked Zachary’s rainbow dragons with a black background).

But then, I had to narrow it down to a colour for the board and batten on the bottom half of the wall.  Which was the main part of the kid’s bedroom redesign, making it look like our primary bedroom and the shared kids’ room.

Considering the rainbow dragons literally incorporate all the colours, I had a lot of options!

Although, the main thing was that I didn’t want it too close to the colours we have elsewhere.  Including the purple in our room, the red/orange in the kids’ room, and the light blue in the living and entry.

four colour options to match wallpaper

I put a vote up in my Instagram Stories with 6 colours (or opinions).  Then, I got swatches for the top four (pink, yellow, navy or teal) and did a second vote.  The boys liked the navy, and Élise liked pink, ha.

You’ll just have to come back next time to see what option I went with :)

9 x 10 kid bedroom layouts

Another part of the bedroom redesign was choosing a new layout.  Because Félix moved from a crib to a big bed, it made sense to put it along the wall to have less area to fall off, ha.  This is the smallest bedroom at 9×10 (although the shared bedroom isn’t that much bigger at 11×9).

There were still a few options of where to put the bed; including in the closet (making another nook), moving it the opposite way (either against a wall or in the middle of the room), or keeping it the same front-to-back orientation, but putting it somewhere else.

As mentioned earlier, I have some progress photos to share next week.  Including the colour I chose, the updates to the closet, and some sneak-peeks of the wallpaper up!  On Instagram, I’ve just shared black and white photos so far, so you’ll get the first look at the colour!

Any guesses!?
