It’s almost been one full week of May, and as you may know, I like to do a Monthly Update post on the first Saturday of the month.  We’re just getting some nice weather, so it’s kind of a transition period between working on projects inside the house, and starting on some outdoor updates as well.  If you want a recap of everything that’s been going on around here the past month, then let’s dive into my plans for May 2016!

What Happened in April?

Last week I shared a tour of our current yard situation, and I can now officially say that all the snow has melted!  The weather was gorgeous yesterday (hottest day so far in the mid-20s) but sadly this weekend we are back at cold and rainy :(.  Wait, I should clarify – there is no snow in our yard, but there is still snow around town and in some of our neighbours’ yards too.

On the big outdoors to-do list, we did manage to stop at the dump yesterday and clear out all the garbage from our porch/yard.  Our neighbours cut down a tree that was on the edge of the property lines, so we helped cleaned that up (and my leaves magically got raked too, yay!).  But there are some new tree pollens/mess in the front yard that I am hoping to sweep away soon.

The biggest updates on the blog have been that we started (and are still working on) our One Room Challenge basement bathroom.  In April, I’ve shared the bathroom design ideas, the plumbing and framing workthe bathroom drywalling, the floor and wall tiling; and last week I showed our custom Ikea vanity too.  We are STILL working on the space, but it should (fingers crossed) get completed today, with maybe some paint touch-ups tomorrow.

Although, the Husband has been saying the last two days that “today is the day it’s going to get finished”, we keep running out of materials we thought we had (plumbing stuff mostly) and need to make trips out to the store.  Oh, and I finally got the lights installed (which could have happened over a week or so ago and would have been MUCH more convenient instead of me moving lamps around everywhere).  Anyways, the lights went in and then I saw some imperfections in my drywalling patches (mostly on the ceiling) so I of course am doing some more little touch-ups on that (which is again a hassle because now that the vanity is in place, I have extra cleaning to do when I sand…).

Okay!

Enough about the bathroom for now (this Tuesday will be the big reveal!) and let’s remember some non-bathroom posts I shared this month, such as my delicious Chunky Monkey Brownie Bites (which I was VERY tempted to make again a week later); my How to Start a Scrapbook tutorial, and let’s also not forget that I am still very pregnant and had a baby shower this month too amidst all the chaos of the renovations :)

And yes, speaking of me being very pregnant, here is a photo of my big ‘ole belly this morning.  My belly button is officially an outie, and random people definitely know I am pregnant!

At the start of the month I pulled a butt-muscle when I was walking Tootsie (too much info?).  It would come every few days and hurt for five minutes, then go away.  I figured it was a normal/random back problem for me (did I mention I have the back of a 70-year-old man?).  Anyways, as the month progressed it would start to hurt more and more, and now I think it might be pregnancy related (and/or have something to do with me always being in weird cramped positions trying to drywall or tile the bathroom haha!).

Some days I could hardly walk (which Tootsie was not happy about since our walks kept getting longer, but we weren’t really going as far!) and I’ve since resorted to trying to sleep with a pillow between my legs (which apparently helps pregnant ladies) and it’s sort of better.  But then again… I am now doing less bending/contorting for long periods of time in the bathroom… so who knows!

At the start-ish of the month I read as many blog articles as I could about DIY laundry recipes.  I think one of the blogs I followed shared a recipe, then I just became obsessed with finding different recipe variations so I could test one out (spoiler-alert, they’re pretty much all the same).  I obviously had to make my own, and I’ve been using it ever since.

Actually, I mixed in half and half with my normal powder Tide, have one that is solely the DIY recipe, and I have some extra grated soap bar and a plain borax/washing soda mix too.  Grating the soap bar was the MOST tedious part; and although it was very quick on the thin grating option, it ended up being too large and cheesy looking.  The “zested” bar of soap worked perfectly size-wise, but TOOK WAY TOO LONG to do.  Like I quit with half of the soap bar left and that was after FOREVER trying to grate it down.

But yes, I have been using the borax/washing soda for other random cleaning – and I will have some future updates on that front soon enough :)

Book(s) Read in April

I was super productive in April and managed to read two whole books (and then some!).  Okay, it was mostly because other people had them on hold at the library and I had to return them by a certain date.  And I did need to take random “pregnancy” breaks during the DIY work for the bathroom, so that involved me reading on the floor while waiting for my shortness of breath or tiredness (or butt pains) to go away.

The Orenda by Joseph Boyden (a fiction novel recommended by the Husband’s aunt)
The Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes (one on my to-read list for a while)
and I’m also slowly picking away at Extraordinary Uses for Everyday Things by Reader’s Digest (which is helping fuel my random DIY/homemade recipe craze I think!).

I still have to finish What to Expect When You’re Expecting, so maybe I’ll pick that up again soon and read it in May.

Minimalist Goals

Items Added:

Items Removed:

  • All our renovation stuff is actually gone
  • A few pairs of socks got the heave-ho
  • Returned some baby shower duplicates

Want to know something cool/weird?  I’ve NOT had to buy any maternity clothes yet.  Now, for all you mommas out there, please don’t hate me if you had to spend hundreds of dollars on clothes as you were getting bigger… but other than a couple of items I received as gifts/hand-me-downs at Christmas and in February, I am still wearing all my regular clothes.  I’ve always liked my pants a little bit looser, so other than having to forego a belt or wear a larger belt… everything still fits.  And I mean, my shirts were sort of stretchy, and if they get misshapen from my belly, well than I will be happy to purge them when I am back down to my pre-pregnancy size.  I do have to pull down my shirts every now and then as they ride up, but that only really happens if I do a lot of walking around.

Plans for May 2016

Oh please let the bathroom be done soon so I can start on the nursery!  Baby is due in just over a month, and I’ve thankfully had the time to work on getting the desks moved downstairs and have painted the Pink Room (now the guest bedroom); but I still have to clear some clutter from there, move the couch and get the bed and furniture in.

Then the Blue Room/nursery painting needs to get done, and we need to build the crib and properly store all the baby stuff.  I still need to purge the last bit of items from the closet in that room, and I’m hoping that there will be a much larger list of “Items Removed” in next month’s update!

And yes, I will be sharing some photos of both of the new rooms once they are complete, and hopefully will be able to show you some other projects I’ve been working on around here (you know, once they are done too!).

But now I must go wake up the Husband so we can get this bathroom finished because it’s the major thing holding up all my other plans (oh how I can’t wait to properly clean up the basement and return everything to a normal, non-construction zone room).  I’ve been cleaning as we go of course and putting things away as we are no longer needing them, but there’s one last little pile to go!
