I’m sharing a completed space from our recent camp renovations! This 3-bedroom house is almost complete, so stay tuned for some more room reveals in the next little while. First up, I’m going to talk about making a hotel-like bedroom with just a little bit of demo. Ready for some pictures!?
(Before you check out all the photos, just ignore the uncovered duvets and non-matching sheets lol)

First up, let’s look at how this room was set up a few months ago when we took possession. There was a king-sized bed facing a TV and plenty of space all around.

One super unique feature for this room is the open area to the bathroom vanity. Which reminded me of a hotel room and kind of spurred this idea on! (Plus the fact that I wanted to be able to sleep 2 more people in this house for Airbnb purposes)

With the super tall king bed and the wide-angle lens, it made it difficult to tell the scale of the space in the photos. For example, you could fit two queen beds on either side of the window (about 60″ wide). But then you wouldn’t be able to walk in on one side which is not ideal. But then I mocked up a bunch of different layouts to see how I could squeeze two queen beds in.

There were two long closets in this bedroom – both of which we didn’t really need for an Airbnb rental. Buttttt if we took out the closet that was facing the room, we would have 2′ more length to work with – the exact space we needed for a good layout.

The closet in the bedroom had dusty louvered doors and a built-in low shelf. One of the things that made this reno easier was that the flooring continued into the closet.

The kids were very excited to help take down walls (did you see our dining room wall video?). This closet was really just doors, the header, and a small side wall.

Once cleaned, we moved the king bed out and brought in two queen beds. The queen beds came with the house, and I had already purchased two twin beds for another room.

The trickiest part of removing the closet was patching the existing flooring. We made a built-in bench in the dining room wherein I was able to take out some laminate boards to reuse for this room. The big problem was dealing with a self-leveler making the “inside” of the closet 1/2″ higher! Which meant that I had to take out a few extra boards, then chipped away the high areas as much as I could, and used some floor patch to get it to match up better.
Hotel-Like Room Reveal
Oh, and of course we also put some drywall up to cover the exposed framing. And then I like patched and sanded it a billion times to try to get is as smooth as possible. It’s still not 100% – but it’s definitely a lot better than before!

I do have matching bedding, but I haven’t washed and put it on yet, ha.

With a 16′ wide bedroom, you can fit in two 5′ wide queen beds with 2′ of clearance between for nightstands.

Had we not removed the closet, one of the beds would have to be against the wall. (Or we could only have 1′ of clearance which is not enough to walk around). The photo above shows the same view comparing the king bed to two queens.

Would you rent a space that had a room like this setup? Honestly, it’s just like a hotel, which I figured people were used to :)
Oh! And do you recognize that teal headboard? It’s actually the DIY headboard I made a few years ago – with brand new fabric.
Let me tell you about the headboard fiasco this weekend (lol). It would have been best to have two matching headboards, but most of the furniture in this room is a set that came with the house. I tried to find something similar secondhand, but with a timeline approaching (and a free headboard just waiting for me in storage) I went with two different ones. But then I couldn’t just move the beds around, could I!?
One had a taller boxspring/mattress, so I wanted the taller headboard to go with that bed. I made the husband swap it out (against his many complaints) and apparently it was a beast since the bolts were really stuck. And then our youngest (who was overly tired since it was late at night) took one look at the swap and had a fit. He wanted us to just “move it back”. Cue me trying to staple on the new fabric to get it set up as quickly as possible. Which surprisingly didn’t take long. Félix still insisted he hated it and it was disgusting.
(And then, somehow the next day he deemed it the most beautiful headboard ever and even hugged it!)

More “Hotel Room” Photos

We’ve definitely dubbed this room the “hotel room” and have been calling it that for the last couple of months. The photo above shows a good before/after comparison of the whole room again.
I’d still like to get some more lamps/lighting in (one tiny lamp in the middle is not enough!) and possibly some artwork.

I also have mirrors that we can hang in all the bedrooms. But this room has a dresser with a mirror (and the mirror at the vanity) so I think I might be able to skip one in here.

Not sure if you noticed in the before photos, but there was a painted border along all the ceiling edges. Which, obviously didn’t match up anymore when we took out the closet. Which meant that I had to repaint the entire ceiling too!

Can you believe a closet used to be here!? What do you think? A trio of mirrors on this wall? Art? Hooks?!

Oh, and here’s a closeup photo of the floor in the area we patched. Walking barefoot, you definitely feel some flex and uneven-ness where we tried to patch as best as we can. Butttttt a lot of the laminate throughout the house is kind of wonky/gap-py, so it’s not like it’s the only area that isn’t perfect. I think I’m going to add some runners in between the beds so it’s nice and soft underfoot too.

I’m also adding wallpaper to the wall behind the mirror at the vanity! It’s super subtle and will be the same in both bathrooms. And I did paint the bathroom here (toilet/shower room), but need to possibly swap out the light fixture. We’re going to do a big lightbulb swap soon since a lot of the bulbs colours don’t match. So hopefully that will solve the dark/warm issue.

So, what do you thinking about the idea of making a hotel-like bedroom here!? Essentially, taking a larger-than-needed room and putting in two queen beds instead of one king. With this change, we can now accommodate 8 guests instead of 6 – the perfect amount for a waterfront vacation spot I’d say.
Please let me know if the updates I have planned make sense. Aka some artwork behind the beds, updated night reading (lamps), possibly mirrors? And yes, I will have duvet covers and matching sheets when guests are staying :)
