Hello Greg – if you have large spaces (more than 2″), you should use a larger piece of wood, or you can add something behind (like a 1/2″ plywood) to contain the concrete. Anything less than 2″ won’t be a super big deal; as in, the concrete will pour out a bit, but it shouldn’t go too far (and you’ll most likely be covering the area with dirt/rocks) after it’s set.
