Today I’m sharing the cutest DIY pom pom ornaments that you can make for Christmas.  I got the idea for these ornaments from an advent calendar craft last year and I knew I had to recreate it.  It’s a super easy project that kids can help with (ish), and you can customize the colours and patterns how you want.

We’re doing a rainbow tree this year (hopefully should be putting it up today or tomorrow!) and I knew multi-coloured pom pom ornaments would be the sweetest look.

I also debated doing full-coloured balls (aka all pom poms in one colour), but decided to keep them all rainbow-y.  You can do this same craft with red, white, and green balls for a more traditional Christmas colour scheme.  Or any other combination of colours, really.

Oh, and technically, the spelling is pompom or pompon BUT everywhere I looked online for similar projects has it separated as pom pom (without a hyphen).  I’ll use pompom and pom pom interchangeably – but not because I don’t know the correct way.  More like I want to make sure that people who search for this project can find it :)

Supplies Needed

I linked to the 1″ styrofoam balls and 8mm pompoms I used, but you can use larger sizes to make bigger baubles.  (PS: 2″ balls would have made a more normal sized bauble).  My pack of multi-coloured pompoms came with eight colours.  And other than trying to ensure that the same colour didn’t touch itself, I didn’t do any sort of pattern.

For this project, I bought the pompoms and the balls (using glue sticks and hooks I had from the dollar store) for a total cost of about $25.  I still have most styrofoam balls left, so I can always do another craft later.

First, you need to straighten the ornament hook and stab the unhooked end into your styrofoam ball.  I would then add hot glue and three pompoms around to make sure it stuck in there.

You can do this project with kids if you are not worried about the hot glue.  Otherwise, I had my kids sort through the pompoms, and help pick out the next colour I would add.  Élise (5) tried to do one herself, but she glooped on way too much hot glue.  I wouldn’t let Félix (3/4) do the glue himself, but he liked to stick the pompoms on.

For the first pom pom ornament or two, I would work to complete the whole thing at once.  For the next sets, I would do a section, then let it dry/harden, then do another one, let it dry, etc.  I’m not sure if one method is better than another.

OH!  I should mention, I saw other pom pom ornament projects online that use white glue.  Honestly, I’d be worried about the dry time with those and the pompoms moving too much.  But it’s definitely an option if you want to make it a more kid-safe project.

I actually finished all my pom pom balls last week (when I uploaded the video).  But we didn’t have our tree up at the time and I couldn’t take the final photos.

We put our new tree up at the cottage first, so I brought them there for these photos.  PS: this was one of the trees I shared last week!

What do you think of these cute pom pom ornaments?  With the pack of pompoms and styrofoam balls that I bought, I ended up making 17 multi-coloured ornaments (and one that didn’t have yellow).  There are still a few pompoms left in each colour – but I’ll let the kids decide what to do with those.

Oh, and Zachary really wanted to make a striped rainbow ornament – so that’s certainly an option too!  (I’m going to let him do that soon, he just always happened to be busy when I was making these).
